The Signs and Risk of Gum Disease

Anyone’s mouth can succumb to gum disease. There are millions of people across the country suffering from gum disease, and some of those people have no idea they even have a problem. Gum disease is incredibly invasive and can be painful. It’s estimated that about 50 percent of Americans 30 and older will struggle with gum disease. That percentage goes up to about 75 percent for seniors (those 65 and older).

Gum disease can strike without warning, but the first stages often bring bleeding or swollen gums. Other signs include problems like tooth pain, bad breath, or loose teeth.

Important note: The early stage of gum disease is curable. We can reverse this management in the office and even antibiotics. The most advanced form of gum disease, periodontitis, is not curable. This advanced stage of gum disease may even cause the teeth and gums to pull apart. If you have periodontitis, we recommend that you visit the office about once every three to four months.

How to Treat Gum Disease

Because gum disease is the leading cause of missing teeth, it needs to be treated as soon as you realize there is a problem. To do this, we need to remove the infection and set the stage for the teeth and gums to reattach naturally. Most dental offices either do not offer comprehensive gum treatment or refer patients to a specialist. Concerning the number of people who have gum disease, that means millions of people just across Texas will need to visit a specialist to restore their mouth.

To make things more convenient for you, Hillcrest Dental Care is offering state-of-the-art gum surgery as well as a deep cleaning (a deep cleaning allows us to remove the tartar and plaque beneath the gum line).

Instead of using stitches or scalpels, we’re using lasers. The laser actually evaporates the infection from the mouth and sets the stage for healthy tooth and gum reattachment. There is absolutely no cutting of the gums, and the recovery period is substantially faster compared with traditional gum surgery.
