You’ve had your dental fillings for a while. They have helped prevent a new cavity from forming in your tooth.
You appreciate that.
You may not be quite as happy with how that filling looks. Metal fillings do a great job restoring the function of decayed teeth and reducing the risk of more decay in that same time.
But metal fillings can be distracting, and with time, they can become much darker. From a cosmetic standpoint, the color can be a real concern for many patients.
It’s also just one of the reasons you may want to talk to someone at Hillcrest Dental Care about when to replace your dental fillings. We are proud to offer composite or tooth-colored fillings for our patients in and around Waco, TX.

Fillings Don’t Last Forever
It would be wonderful if you could get one filling that would last the rest of your life. In spite of the many improvements in dentistry, a “permanent” filling does not yet exist.
This makes it even more important for anyone who already has a filling to continue getting routine dental cleanings and exams. Our dental professionals will keep a close eye on your old fillings. We will be looking for signs of wear and tear and let you know when it’s time to replace those fillings with new ones.
From a preventive care standpoint, your filling can become less effective if it has any of these problems:
- Cracks in the filling
- Chips in the filling
- Natural wear on the filling
- Separation between the filling and your tooth
- Loose fillings
Metal fillings contract and expand. This is normal, but over time, it can affect the integrity of the filling as well. If your filling is chipped, cracked, or starts to separate from your teeth, cavity-causing bacteria can get into places that can’t be cleaned with a toothbrush.
The same is true if a filling separates from a tooth or, worse, that filling falls out.
When any of these happen, your filling is no longer protecting your tooth against more decay. By replacing old and worn-out fillings, you can restore the protective benefits once again.
Fillings Don’t Have to be Obvious
If you’ve lived with metal fillings for any length of time, you may be aware that they can be distracting to other people. Metal has a way of shining so that it stands out when it’s placed so close to your natural teeth.
One of the advances in modern dentistry is that you can now get fillings that match the color of your real teeth. By using a composite resin, your filling can blend in with your smile.
After your old metal filling is removed, we can layer the resin in the cavity. The resin can be hardened to restore the function of your tooth. It also can be shaded and polished so most people won’t be able to tell where the filling ends and the tooth begins.
